Thoughts

I think I'm too critical.  I sit around the English Office table listening to my co-workers' conversations and I have nothing to say.  It's because I'm too busy thinking how self absorbed these people are.  Maybe it's because they don't want to bring their opinions on social matters into the workplace, but these people have nothing better to talk about than shopping, shitty television shows and the "oh, so wonderful nonsense their kids did."  I don't get it.

Then, if a social/political topic comes up, they have the most asinine opinions of it.  For instance, someone brought up "going green" the other day.  I was elated.  Finally, something I could actually talk about rather than sit and eat my lunch in silence and have them look at me as if I were a mongloid.  I mentioned that Sean and I will be growing our own garden and using our own compost for it.  They looked at me as if I had 9,000 heads.  Compost?  Ew.  That's nasty.  They were also dismissive of organic products, especially organic cleaning.  I brought up the effects of things like bleach on the environment and people and they still thought I was a loon.

It's people like this that are killing our planet and keep me up at night.  I'm the looney tooney hippie of the English Department.  Sue me for wanted to not harm the planet I live on by growing my veggies, create less waste by having a compost pile (in a compost container so it doesn't stick too!), and making my own cleaning products.  Wow.  I must be a moron.

By the Goddess, I must be a mongoloid moron too. I can't believe there are so darned many idiots out there who say they want to help clean the environment but never do anything about it.

Well, change happens slowly. We may be the generation to start it, but it's possibly only our grandchildren who will really benefit from it.

I also must have 9,000 heads and be a mongoloid. While we are still in an apartment at the moment, as soon as we have a bit of our own green space my husband and I plan to garden and compost too.

Well, continue to do what your heart tells you is right. Each one of us who work toward the benefit of the earth are taking little steps but they will add up in time and the minds that were once small will grow as long as the seed is planted.

Mongoloids unite! I'm also looking forward to owning a house and greening it up as much as I can. My dream house object to own is a rain barrel.

And I know what you mean about teacher talk, GW. I work in a school too, and the main reason nothing ever actually gets done is because no one is willing to talk about the harder issues. At my school the conversations in the teacher's lounge revolve around the best way to duct tape a student to their desk. Although I will admit to participating and sometimes starting those ones, I would enjoy it if conversations could get deeper without the fear of teachers biting each others... um... 9,000 heads off. :P

P.S. Could you pass on some of your cleaning product recipes? I'd love to start replacing some of my supplies with homemade ones. :)

Wow! I definitely have this problem too, but I don't work right now, so it's mostly having to deal with family members and friends. And that makes it even more hard. Plus it seems like whatever comes out of my mouth automatically means I'm preaching (so I was a little preachy about vegetarianism growing up, BIG DEAL, I rarely even talk about my veganism anymore!). But honestly, I'm definitely with you when it comes to people like that keeping you up at night. I even bought cloth diapers to use for my daughter (and was royally pissed off when they didn't work like they said they would so I had to use regular ones anyway -Sad face-) Anyway, I don't understand how people can live with themselves when they don't recycle, throw litter on the ground, instead of in a trash can, and various other things. It's so frustrating!

Oh my word this makes me so cross! Why should we be the freaks and weirdoes when these guys are doing nothing to help? Grrrrrrrrr! :) Thankfully most of my colleagues know about my eco-warrior and witch status and go along with it for an easy life. Be patient, take baby steps and you never know, some may be more sympathetic than you expect. Good luck :)

Hi GW, I thought I'd check in and see how you and the school weirdos are faring during the budgeting craze. Here in WI the teachers are getting hit pretty hard, and I know that Maryland teachers got their pink slips last week. Drop me a line and let me know how you're doing! lmdeakman@gmail.com
